Assistant Professor in Graphic Design

Job Description:

The Department of Art and Design at Binghamton University invites applications for a tenure-track position of Assistant Professor in Graphic Design, to begin Fall 2022. The successful candidate will have a strong record of research and practice in the design field and will share the department's commitment to excellence in teaching, underpinned by disciplinary expertise, a pedagogy oriented toward student engagement and inclusion, and an active design practice. Knowledge of graphic design theory and methodology, typography, print and web design, and excellent communication and problem-solving skills, along with a fluency in Mac OS, Adobe CC, and other industry-standard print and web design software are required.

We particularly welcome applicants with expertise in one or more of the following: UI/UX design; front end web development (CSS, HTML, Javascript); and data graphics (Javascript, D3.js, et al.).

Graphic design is a robust program within the Department of Art and Design, offering BA and BFA degrees, currently with more than 100 majors. The successful candidate will participate in the development of a proposed MFA degree in graphic design and will be inclined to work collaboratively with colleagues in support of new and ongoing initiatives within and beyond the department, as appropriate.

This position is part of Binghamton's multiyear cluster hire initiative in Arts Practice, Performance and Research in the 21st Century; for more information, see https://www.binghamton.edu/harpur/research/cluster-hire.html.

The Department of Art and Design recognizes that the field of graphic design does not reflect the diversity of the population that it serves. We invite applications from colleagues who share in our commitment to a more inclusive discipline, through design practice, research, and teaching.

Requirements:

Applicants are required to have completed an MFA in graphic design, or cognate degree, by the start of this appointment. Demonstrated teaching experience is preferred.
