Director of Inclusive Student Services & the Multicultural Dream Center

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION: 

Provides visionary leadership and oversight for Intercultural Student Services (ISS) and the Multicultural Dream Center (MDC). Responsible for programs and services which support the learning and development of a diverse student body.

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES: 

Provides vision, leadership, strategic direction, and oversight for the services and programs in all areas of ISS. Hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates professional, paraprofessional, and student staff for ISS and the MDC. Provides support and direction for the MDC. Advises the MDC which includes but is not limited to: meeting weekly with ISS and MDC staff, approving hours, providing guidance through board development, planning events, navigating campus policies, and reviewing budget and major purchases as needed. Ensures high quality and professional customer service is delivered in a student-centered and efficient manner; creates an environment in the MDC where program and service effectiveness are evaluated on a regular basis and results are used to effect continuous quality improvement. Provides oversight for the communication and marketing of ISS and the MDC including print, websites, social media, and other related materials.  Supports student-led initiatives that design and implement programs to foster greater awareness and understanding of diverse identities. Provides leadership as the Student Affairs representative and Co-Director of the Center for Multicultural Engagement (CME). In conjunction with the Faculty Director of the CME, provides direction and oversight of the CME committee and the advancement of multicultural perspectives campus-wide through coordination of programs such as SAFE on Campus. Responsible for designing, establishing, revising, and implementing organizational goals, objectives, strategic plans, policies, and operating procedures as related to the personal and educational development of CI’s historically underrepresented, undocumented, and underserved students. Responsible for developing and implementing the strategic plan for ISS and MDC (including vision and purpose statements), strategic goals, learning objectives learning outcomes and professional competencies. Creates, maintains, and revises an assessment plan for ISS and the MDC that purposefully connects the Division and the University’s mission, goals, aims, and outcomes for diversity and inclusion. Prepares reports (annually and as requested by the VPSA and AVPSA-ROI) concerning the operations and activities of ISS and the MDC. Assist with identifying and developing strategies for increasing graduation rates of underserved, underrepresented, and undocumented students while fostering an educational environment founded on the construct of cultural diversity, appreciation, and inclusion of students from all backgrounds; contributing to an inclusive, transparent, and respectful campus community. Recommends, develops, supports, and/or carries out campus-wide programs for diversity, multicultural learning, social justice, and inclusive excellence grounded in multicultural competencies and/or MDC learning objectives. Develops curriculum for diversity training to support campus-wide education and promote a positive campus climate for, but not limited to, underrepresented, underserved, and undocumented students. Envisions and implements a year-long diversity and inclusion programming calendar for the University community to include University-sponsored programs such as Latino Heritage Month, Black History Month, and Women’s History Month, etc. Researches trends and best practices related to and issues of diversity, multicultural learning, social justice, and inclusion. Provides support through advocacy and programs for underrepresented, underserved, and undocumented students and/or students who are marginalized due to race, ethnicity or national origin, language, religion, age, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or social status by evaluating their needs and responding to concerns. Responsible for determining the need for new policies and procedures related to multicultural programs, services, budgets, personnel, and facilities as well as the review and modification of existing policies and procedures. Responsible for the overall assessment of programs and services through the Division of Student Affairs’ Comprehensive Program Review (CPR) process and other methods of evaluation. Monitors and evaluates programmatic effectiveness by establishing clear and measurable objectives and learning outcomes for ISS and the MDC. Collects data to help identify where diversity training might be needed and works with the faculty and/or administrators who oversee the identified area to propose and initiate training. Develops annual operating budgets and ensure University resources are efficiently and effectively utilized. Directs the preparation of the annual operating budget and implementation of budget policies and procedures for ISS. Confers with, counsels, and advises students, faculty, staff, and parents regarding programs, services, and opportunities offered by ISS and the MDC. Advises students on academic and personal issues while making referrals where appropriate to tutoring, counseling, and other retention support services.  Works collaboratively with Enrollment Management, Student Business Services, Academic Advising, faculty, and administrators in the planning of timelines and programs as they relate to multicultural student needs. Builds and maintains key relationships with external constituents and educators to increase awareness of CI programs and community involvement. Develops and maintains a good working relationship with the Division’s leadership, staff and other University constituents. Actively supports the goals and objectives established by the Title IX Inclusion Officer.  Works collaboratively within the Division of Student Affairs to carry out Division goals to provide a positive, inclusive and successful student experience, especially those goals with respect to issues of diversity and inclusion. Collaborates with other administrative offices and faculty to develop and promote co-curricular initiatives and programs related to diversity and inclusion. Serves on Student Affairs and University-wide committees and attends Student Affairs and University-wide trainings and meetings as appropriate. Performs additional related duties as assigned.

SUPERVISOR/OTHER WORK RELATIONSHIPS:

Reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Student Affairs-Retention, Outreach & Inclusive Student Services.  Works closely with the Associate Director of Student Success & Outreach Programs, as well as all programs within Retention, Outreach & Inclusive Student Services and the Division of Student Affairs. 

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: 

Master’s Degree in Counseling, Communication, Student Personnel, Higher Education, Social Work, Social Justice, or related field required; doctoral degree preferred. At least five years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience required. At least three to five years of progressive leadership required. Minimum of three years of experience in multicultural programming at a post-secondary institution required. Experience, knowledge, and sensitivity in serving and meeting the needs of AB540 students from recruitment to graduation. Strong and effective supervisory and budget management skills; effective interpersonal and communication skills as demonstrated by a pronounced sensitivity to the needs of a diverse student body; demonstrated experience working with diverse student, faculty, staff and community populations and proven ability to create an inclusive and welcoming campus environment. Ability to analyze and evaluate complex problems and data, derive logical conclusions, evaluate alternatives, and implement timely and practical solutions. Ability to adapt quickly in a fast-paced environment with multiple and changing priorities and deadlines. Visionary leadership ability to envision and implement new programs as well as improve existing programs. Experience in community development, multicultural and/or diversity programs. The ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures independently and use judgment and discretion to act when precedents do not exist. Demonstrated experience in successful program development and implementation. Must be able to work collaboratively with multiple constituencies in a complex and dynamic environment and demonstrate the following abilities: to resolve complex issues; to work creatively and independently; to plan, direct and assess programming in a timely fashion; to effectively establish and maintain cooperative working relationships within a diverse, multicultural environment of students, staff, faculty, and academic programs across the University; ability to conduct a needs based assessment and design co-curricular programs which are outcome driven. Strong written and verbal communication skills, and proficiency in the use of computers, including appropriate software. Excellent communication, conflict resolution and problem solving skills, experience in crisis management and a demonstrated commitment to diversity. Must have the ability to make presentations to management, faculty and student groups. Must maintain the confidentiality of student information at all times and abide by FERPA guidelines.
