Assistant Professor, Film and Mass Media

 

The Nicholson School of Communication and Media (NSCM) in the College of Sciences (COS) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) invites applications for two nine-month, tenure-earning track assistant professors anticipated to begin August 2022.

 

The selected candidates will contribute to the Film and Mass Media program’s mission through teaching undergraduate and graduate-level courses. Graduate-level activities will also include supporting the M.F.A. degree by providing critiques, mentoring, and serving on graduate thesis committees.

 

We seek scholars or practitioners of film, television, or related disciplines whose work engages social, creative, or discipline relevant issues and encourages and challenges students to increase critical fluency in various film forms. We are especially interested in individuals who can contribute through their research and creative activity, teaching and service to the diversity, inclusion, and excellence of our academic community and foster an environment in which faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds, cultures and personal experiences are welcomed and can thrive.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An M.F.A. or doctorate in film production, screenwriting, film arts, or a closely related field from an accredited institution with evidence of accomplishment in filmmaking is required by the time of hire.
  • At least four semesters of experience as an instructor of record in teaching undergraduate courses at an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • A demonstrated ability to teach classes in foundational production skills such as directing, cinematography, editing, or sound design.
  • A grasp of academic responsibilities.
  • A demonstrated potential for active university service.
  • Show strong potential for sustained scholarship or creative production in the field with a record of publications or creative work at venues or outlets on a regional or national scale.
  • Have strong communication skills.
  • Experience in collaborating on academic initiatives with colleagues or peers.
  • The potential to teach graduate courses by providing evidence of experience in having previously taught graduate courses or specialized upper-level undergraduate courses.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An established creative practice and/or training with an effective competency in at least one of the following areas: directing, cinematography, nonlinear editing and digital asset management, or sound recording and reproduction.
  • Applicants who can demonstrate through their teaching philosophy or record an ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students to foster collaboration, experimentation, and innovation with the movie image.
  • Candidates who can demonstrate the ability to mentor graduate students to produce independent microbudget feature-length films, from funding to production to distribution.
  • Candidates holding a Ph.D. in film/critical studies or film-related discipline from an accredited institution are preferred for one position.

The NSCM Film and Mass Media program offers a B.A. in film production that emphasizes

 

collaborative skills in filmmaking, a B.F.A. in film production that emphasizes creative directorial skills (limited access), and an M.F.A. in feature film production that offers students creative opportunities in fiction, nonfiction, or experimental cinematic modes.  In addition to the Film degrees, the Film and Mass Media program includes journalism and media production management (formerly radio-television) degrees.
