THE SEARCH

The University of Texas at Austin, Texas’ leading research university, seeks an innovative administrator and researcher to serve as the Director of the Marine Science Institute and Chair of the Department of Marine Science, both located in Port Aransas, Texas.

Established in 1941 and located on Mustang Island, The University of Texas Marine Science Institute (UTMSI) is the oldest and most significant marine research campus on the Texas coast. Since the Institute’s founding, scientists have been engaged in research focused on estuaries, coastal, and blue-water oceans to help understand and share knowledge of the world’s critical ecosystems and educate the next generation of scientific leaders. Today, faculty and students are working to understand how our oceans and coasts are changing through time and educating students and the public on the evolution and preservation of the Texas coastline and other marine environments. The University of Texas Marine Science Institute has a tremendous economic impact and is a critical resource for the State of Texas and for the nation. It is home of the Mission-Aransas National Estuarine Research Reserve, Beaufort Lagoon Ecosystems LTER, the Amos Rehabilitation Keep, and the Fisheries and Mariculture Lab, engaging thousands of visitors each year.

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences, the Director will provide the vision and leadership that are required for UTMSI to advance knowledge of coastal and blue water oceans with exceptional research, innovative teaching, and diverse public outreach programs. The Director is responsible for the daily operations and strategic planning for the Institute and Department and its approximately 200 faculty, staff, students, and volunteers and oversees an annual operating budget of $9 million. The new Director will lead in recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty, and growing academic programs and research, advancing UTMSI’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and equitable Texas Science community, and engaging meaningfully with the local community in the Port Aransas and Texas Gulf Coast region.

UT Austin has retained Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in this recruitment. All inquiries, nominations, and applications should be directed to the search firm electronically at: www.imsearch.com/8042.
