Job Description

Working in strong partnership with and reporting directly to the Vice Dean for Institutional Advancement, the Senior Director of Development and Alumni Engagement will help create and execute short and long-term strategies for fundraising and alumni engagement at Penn Nursing that align with the School's newest strategic plan: Leading to A Healthier, More Equitable Future. The Senior Director will maintain an active personal portfolio of major and principal individual donor prospects -- identifying, cultivating, and soliciting these to close high five-figure gifts and above. Along with the Vice Dean, the Senior Director will share responsibility to collaborate with Central Development staff on targeted prospect outreach activities. They will serve as the School liaison for central corporate and foundation relations (CFR), and work to sustain past and create new CFR partnerships for Penn Nursing that lead to substantive grant funding. The Senior Director will provide leadership and creative direction for the Nursing Annual Fund to ensure that goals are met or exceeded and to adopt strategies to further enhance the fund. In support of ongoing efforts to grow Nursing's donor pipeline, they will be entrepreneurial in identifying potential new prospect pools and will conduct fundraising analysis, benchmarking, and data tracking. Managing the Associate Director of Alumni Engagement, the Sr. Director will work with them to sustain, enhance, and grow alumni connections and programming for the School. They also will tap into Penn Nursing's parent pool to strengthen their ties and engagement. They will work to heighten and strengthen recognition for donors by partnering with the Associate Director of Marketing and Assistant Development Officer of Stewardship and Major Gifts to create innovative donor stewardship methods. In support of the Vice Dean's management of the Board of Advisors, the Senior Director will provide oversight of the Board's online technological platforms, crafting engagement strategies to maximize and expand upon its use. The Senior Director will serve as a member of the Vice Dean's leadership team, as well as OIA representation on internal Nursing Advisory Boards as assigned. They will have four direct reports: The Sr. Associate Director of Alumni Engagement, Associate Director of Institutional Advancement, Assistant Development Officer/Stewardship and Major Gifts, and Administrative Coordinator. They will oversee and manage the Development budget and oversee direct reports' management of their budgets (e.g., Annual Fund and Alumni Engagement).

Responsibilities/Duties:

Fundraising

Work in close and strong partnership with the Vice Dean for Institutional Advancement, to create and execute short and long-term strategies for fundraising at Penn Nursing. Identify, cultivate, and solicit individual and institutional prospects for high five-figure plus gift to contribute to overall yearly fundraising goals. Conduct at least 150 virtual or in-person visits per year. Share responsibility to collaborate with Central Development staff on targeted prospect outreach activities. Serve as the School liaison for central corporate and foundation relations (CFR), and work to sustain past and create new CFR partnerships for Penn Nursing that lead to substantive grant funding. Work with Associate Director of Institutional Advancement oversee Nursing Annual Fund to enhance Annual Fund giving over time, in support of ongoing efforts to grow Nursing's donor pipeline, identify potential new prospect pools and conduct fundraising analysis, benchmarking and data tracking.

Donor Relations

Oversee individual stewardship plans and partner with the Associate Director of Marketing to create and implement innovative methods of stewardship for donors. Assist in actual drafting or oversight of drafting of materials and manage Assistant Director of Stewardship in doing the same. Regularly convene “stewardship” team, including Associate Director, Assistant Director and Administrative Coordinate to adopt and implement a dynamic stewardship calendar.

Alumni and Parent Engagement

Managing the Associate Director of Alumni Engagement, work with them to sustain, enhance and grow alumni programming for and connections to the School. Explore potential with Penn Nursing's parent pool to strengthen their ties and engagement, e.g., establishing a Parent's Council and continuing the Parent's e-newsletter.

Advisory Board Support

Provide oversight of the Board's online technological platform, crafting engagement strategies to maximize and expand upon its use. Staff Board subcommittees as needed.

Leadership:

1. Serve as a member of the Vice Dean's leadership team, as well as OIA representation on internal Nursing Advisory Boards, e.g., the Nursing Magazine Board, the Amplify Nurses Podcast, the Bates Center and more.

Management:

1.Supervise four direct reports, the Sr. Associate Director of Alumni Engagement, Associate Director of Institutional Advancement, the Assistant Development Officer/Stewardship and Major Gifts, and Administrative Coordinator.

2.Oversee and manage the Development budget and contribute to oversight/management of the Alumni Engagement and Stewardship budgets

Qualifications:

 

 

  • Bachelors degree; 7 - 10 years of individual fundraising experience with demonstrated success, preferably in higher education (or related field) or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Experience managing volunteers.
  • Ability to function with a high degree of independence with assigned groups of prospects, yet interact collaboratively with colleagues, participating in and contributing to total team effort
  • Results driven with high motivation to work with a sophisticated donor population.
  • Experience in serving volunteer organizations with a professional, customer service-oriented attitude and heightened diplomacy skills.
  • Confidence and maturity to work with senior level administrators, faculty, alumni, and other school-wide constituents
  • Familiarity with database manipulation and other computer software.
  • Travel and some evening/weekend work required, including blocks of time for major events such as Reunion Weekends. Also required is the ability to attend, participate, facilitate, or lead on-campus and off-campus events/activities outside of normal business hours, both on the Philadelphia campus and in regional markets.
