Job Description Summary
The Research Specialist A/B is a jointly held position between the Ovarian Cancer Research Center (OCRC) and the Pancreatic Cancer Research Center (PCRC) and reports to both Research Project Manager in the OCRC BioTrust and Dr. Ben Stanger and Kim Reiss Binder in the PCRC. The Research Specialist is responsible for the entire life cycle of the specimens, starting from identifying potential patients, procurement in cooperation with HUP, PAH, and CCH surgical teams to aseptic processing, through banking and inventory management, to retrieval and disbursement. Essential daily routine also requires the Research Specialist to spend time in Gynecologic Oncology clinic as well as Pancreatic Oncology clinic to interact with new and returning patients and obtain consent for tumor banking purposes and Rapid Autopsy Program purposes as well. Our newest endeavor in the OCRC BioTrust is the Rapid Autopsy Program (aka Penn Legacy Tissue Program) RAP has many moving parts and requires coordination between the patient and their care team, the anatomic pathology department. the research team, and any necessary transportation.

Job Description

The Research Specialist A/B is a jointly held position between the Ovarian Cancer Research Center (OCRC) and the Pancreatic Cancer Research Center (PCRC) and reports to both Research Project Manager in the OCRC BioTrust and Dr. Ben Stanger and Kim Reiss Binder in the PCRC. The Research Specialist A(RS) is responsible for the entire life cycle of the specimens, starting from identifying potential patients, procurement in cooperation with HUP, PAH, and CCH surgical teams to aseptic processing, through banking and inventory management, to retrieval and disbursement. Essential daily routine also requires the Research Specialist to spend time in Gynecologic Oncology clinic as well as Pancreatic Oncology clinic to interact with new and returning patients and obtain consent for tumor banking purposes and Rapid Autopsy Program purposes as well. Close communication and coordination with the clinicians surgery schedules, and the Research Specialist will be the key to perform this responsibility. The RS maintains meticulous auditable records, in a HIPPA compliant manner, of all specimens collected so they can be linked back to the original donor de-identified as appropriate. The RS aids in regulatory compliance by tracking informed consents and by writing and revising SOPs. Specimens include but are not limited to blood, various fluid samples, and solid tumor tissues. Processing skills include dissection, tissue sampling and preparation, blood handling and gradient purification, and advance cell techniques for working with primary cells. The RS is responsible for monitoring and maintaining all laboratory equipment. The RS liaises with cooperative entities including clinicians, the clinical translational research teams, and the staff at facilities such as TTAB and Pathology. The RS is an integral player by being the center of coordination and execution for all these moving parts and will play a pivotal role in successful development and establishment of a new Rapid Autopsy Program in the PCRC as well as in continuous support of the OCRC RAP. Must be able to work after hours and weekends in case of rapid autopsy collection and tumor processing from late surgeries on weekdays.

Research Specialist B: Will have the duties outlined above for the Research Specialist A, with the additional expectation that s(he) will show a higher degree of independence, including the ability to design and troubleshoot experiments with greater autonomy and interpret study results with a lesser degree of input from supervisor(s).

Position is contingent upon funding.
Qualifications:
Research Specialist A: Bachelor's Degree with 0-1 year of related experience in research and clinical study methodologies or equivalent combination of education and experience required

Research Specialist B: Bachelor's Degree with 1-3 year of related experience in research and clinical study methodologies or equivalent combination of education and experience required
