Job Description Summary
The Human Resources Generalist acts as a generalist to support multiple functions for SAS Human Resources and coordinates HR programs, initiatives, events, and other activities for the School of Arts and Sciences. This position will be a key member of the team by handling day to day operations and inquiries, including the management of HR data, communications, and business process approvals. This position will consult with staff and supervisors to advise on HR policies and procedures, including approvals and business processes within the Workday Human Capital Management system.

The School of Arts and Sciences (SAS) forms the foundation of the scholarly excellence that has established Penn as one of the world's leading research universities. We teach students across all 12 Penn schools, and our academic departments span the reach from anthropology and biology to sociology and South Asian studies. The three educational divisions of SAS fulfill different missions, united by the School's broader commitment to providing its students with an unrivaled education in the arts and sciences. The College of Arts and Sciences is the academic home of the majority of Penn undergraduates and provides 60 percent of the courses taken by students in Penn's undergraduate professional schools. The Graduate Division offers doctoral training to over 1,500 candidates in more than 30 graduate programs. And the College of Liberal and Professional Studies provides a range of educational opportunities for lifelong learners and working professionals. SAS Human Resources is one of the administrative offices within the School with broad responsibility for human resource related issues pertaining to more than 700 staff members. We are seeking an HR Generalist to join our team.

DUTIES:

The HR Generalist supports all HR programs and activities for Penn Arts and Sciences, including fielding and escalating inquiries related to human resources policies, procedures, and programs. This includes responding to questions and providing guidance related to recruitment, compensation, benefits, staff relations, leaves, and other HR related topics. They will assess, troubleshoot, and solve a wide range of diverse HR related problems that arise throughout the school. This position will be expected to organize, monitor, and track a large volume of HR related data, including the background checks for working with minors, new hire introductory reviews and performance appraisal entries, merit increase communications, onboarding and offboarding processes and communications, flexible and remote work approvals and documentation, and data/information for other HR programs and processes.

The HR Generalist will also have an active role in Workday Human Capital Management administration, reviewing and approving transactions and providing guidance on HR business transactions within the online system, including the recruitment process for staff, students, and temps, compensation changes, leave requests, and other business processes. This position will also plan and coordinate Penn Arts and Sciences HR events and programs including various staff recognition and appreciation events, information sessions and trainings, and other in-person and online HR programs and events.

Other duties include unemployment claims processing by investigating and responding to all school-wide unemployment claims, drafting and coordinating general HR communications, announcements, and updates to policies and procedures through email communications and website content management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

 

  • Bachelor's degree with 3 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
  • Should have solid understanding of best HR practices and competencies, SHRM CP preferred.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate professionally to a diverse and sophisticated audience both verbally and in writing with diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Must have very strong organizational skills and attention to deal, preferably with significant experience in managing large amounts of confidential information, records, and data.
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and interact in a collaborative and professional manner at all times
  • Expertise in Microsoft Office, especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required.
  • Must possess highly developed problem solving skills with the ability to analyze complex issues
  • Experience designing and managing website content is preferred. Experience with other online applications, such as online survey programs is a plus.
  • Some experience with Workday preferred

 


The salary for this position is expected to be between $45,000 and $65,000.
