Research Technician

The Biology Department in the School of Science at The College of New Jersey is seeking a full-time (35 hours per week) Research Technician. This position is supported by a federal research grant, is available immediately and will last for approximately 24 months (through August 2022). Research in the funded lab focuses on cardiorespiratory control in mammalian neonates. The project will specifically assess the effects of developmental exposure to nicotine on the control and maturation of breathing and heart rate after birth. Following initial training by the Principal Investigator, the technician will work in coordination with the Principal Investigator and undergraduate researchers to conduct and implement all experimental aspects of the funded project. These include (but are not limited to) surgical procedures related to developmental nicotine exposure; plethysmographic recording of heart rate and breathing from neonatal mice; electrophysiological recording of cardiorespiratory signals from isolated brainstem tissue; processing and immunohistochemical analysis of brainstem tissue; and data processing and statistical analyses. The technician will also be responsible for supervising animal husbandry of a breeding mouse colony, monitoring lab supplies and basic maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Qualifications: The position requires a bachelor's degree in science or engineering. Applicants must have at least one year of prior work experience in a science research lab.

  • Ability and desire to work with and train undergraduate students
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects
  • Capability to creatively develop lab infrastructure and procedures

The initial salary for the Research Technician is $29,000 annually working 35 hours per week with incremental increases in salary over the 36 month period.
