The Tutoring Center provides services that facilitate TCNJ students’ learning and persistence as they meet academic challenges throughout their academic careers. Trained in principles and practices of International College Reading and Learning Association certification, peer tutors assist students to master course content and develop learning skills including problem-solving, analytical reading, writing researched arguments, oral presentation techniques, test-taking strategies, and time management.

The Assistant Director of the Tutoring Center is responsible for developing and delivering to students and faculty a full range of academic enhancement services for courses in the Schools of Humanities & Social Sciences (HSS), Education (ED), and Arts & Communication (A&C), as well as writing services for courses in all seven Schools. They oversee the work of graduate assistants and tutors for HSS/ED/A&C and writing, and works collaboratively with the Professional Services Specialist who oversees tutoring for Math/Science/Business/Nursing & Health and Exercise Science Services as well as the Director of the Writing Program.

Develops and offers to faculty and students a full range of academic enhancement services for Schools of Humanities/Social Sciences (HSS) Education (ED), and Arts/Communications (A&C) as well as Writing Consultation services in all seven Schools, which support faculty instructional goals. 

Assigns and oversees work of graduate assistants and tutors for HSS/ED/A&C & writing.

Works collaboratively with the Coordinator who oversees tutoring services for Engineering/Math/Science/Business/Nursing & Health and Exercise Science.

Teaches new-tutor training courses:  IDS 291 Techniques of Tutoring I (first 5 weeks of Fall Semester) and IDS 292 Techniques of Tutoring II-Writing (second 5 weeks of Fall Semester) required for all HSS/ED/A&C & writing tutors in first semester of employment.

Main Responsibilities

SERVICES TO STUDENTS: 

  • Recruits, hires, trains, and supervises tutors and graduate assistants.
  • Designs/updates syllabus and training materials for and facilitates the instruction of the Techniques of Tutoring I (IDS-291), Techniques of Tutoring II (IDS-292).
  • Arranges formal and informal on-going training opportunities for HSS/ED/A&C and writing tutors as well as graduate assistants.
  • On as-needed basis, directly tutor writing, reading, time management, and/or study skills.
  • Manages the new tutors’ progress towards their College Reading and Learning Association certification.

COLLABORATION WITH FACULTY/STAFF:

  • Participates in planning and implementation of services in collaboration with the Writing Program.
  • Works with academic departments and administrative programs to provide student-centered learning support services in writing across all disciplines and for content courses in HSS/ED/A&C. 

TUTORING CENTER ADMINISTRATION WORK

  • Oversees scheduling for HS weekly tutoring sessions, WRI 101, Writing Conferences and Writing & Talking Teams (WATTs).
  • Monitors the student payroll for the HSS/ED/A&C & writing tutors.
  • Supervises the Graduate Assistants working with the HSS/ED/A&C & writing tutors.
  • Manages TCNJ’s contribution of eTutoring-hours for Fall/Spring, winter sessions and summer sessions to Northeast eTutoring Consortium. 
  • Oversees College Reading and Learning Association 5-year Application for Re-Certification.

Required Qualifications

  • MA degree in Humanities/Social Sciences; Humanities/Social Sciences Education; or Developmental Education.
  • Knowledge of current Learning and Writing Center theory and practice.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in higher education administration and supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in teaching training classes and/or workshops for peer helpers drawing from topics in psychology, counseling, and education.
  • Experience with web-based applications for scheduling and managing data.
  • Proficient in the use of MS Suite of applications (Word, Excel, Access) and Google applications (Google Docs, Google Forms, etc.).
