SUNY Empire State College

Presidential Search

The Chancellor and Board of Trustees of the State College of New York (SUNY) system and the Empire State College Council are accepting applications and nominations for the sixth President of Empire State College (Empire State College). The College seeks a forward-thinking and collaborative leader to continue the College’s mission of flexible, accessible, and affordable educational opportunities and core social justice values. This is an unparalleled opportunity to have statewide impact as the leader of a dynamic institution with a history of innovation, especially in the fields of adult and online learning.

Empire State College was established in 1971 by the State College of New York Board of Trustees and then-Chancellor Ernest L. Boyer, who also served as United States Commissioner of Education. Empire State College was envisioned as a distinctive statewide SUNY institution focused on nontraditional teaching and learning, where students create individualized degree programs within broadly defined areas of study with the guidance of faculty advisors. The College offers 110 online degrees and certificates to more than 18,000 students at 30 locations in every region of the state and seven international sites around the world.

The State University of New York is the largest comprehensive system of higher education in the United States, and more than 95 percent of all New Yorkers live within 30 miles of any one of SUNY’s 64 colleges and universities. Across the system, SUNY has four academic health centers, five hospitals, four medical schools, two dental schools, the state’s only college of optometry, and manages one US Department of Energy National Laboratory. In total, SUNY serves about 1.3 million students in credit-bearing courses and programs, continuing education, and community outreach programs. SUNY oversees nearly a quarter of academic research in New York. Research expenditures system-wide were more than $1.0 billion in fiscal year 2020, including significant contributions from students and faculty. There are more than three million SUNY alumni worldwide, and one in three New Yorkers with a college degree is a SUNY alum.

The College is organized around both academic disciplines and geographic regions. Empire State College serves students in New York through face-to-face instruction and services in all regions across the state of New York. The college’s multiple locations are clustered regionally, each serving local needs. These regions include the Buffalo-Niagara area; the Finger Lakes and Genesee Valley; Central New York, the North Country and the Southern Tier; the state’s Capital Region; the mid- and lower-Hudson Valley; three New York City boroughs; and on Long Island. In addition, the Center for International Programs operates in Tirana, Albania; Prague, Czech Republic; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; Athens and Thessaloniki, Greece; Beirut, Lebanon; and Eskisehir, Turkey. These locations are in addition to the College’s Coordinating Center in Saratoga Springs, which houses the President’s Office, the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of Administration, the Office of Enrollment Management, the Office of Alumni and Student Relations, Information Technology Services, the Registrar and Human Resources.

Reporting to the SUNY System Chancellor and working collaboratively with the SUNY Empire State College Council, the President serves as the chief executive officer of the College. The President will oversee the offices of Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, Student Affairs, Communications and Marketing, Finance and Administration, Institutional Equity and Inclusion, and Human Resources while being an active and visible leader at Empire State College’s locations, the state of New York, and throughout the nation.
