An Invitation to Apply for the Position of

Provost

The American University of Armenia

Yerevan, Armenia

The American University of Armenia (AUA), an independent institution of higher education located in Yerevan, Armenia, seeks an accomplished academic leader to serve as Provost. AUA’s Provost will join a thriving university led by a dynamic new President, Prof. Karin Markides, at a pivotal time in the institution's history and the country's development. The role is an exceptional opportunity for a dedicated and skilled academic administrator to build educational and research excellence. As a truly global institution, AUA offers its instructional programs in English, making its programs accessible to qualified individuals from both Armenia and other countries in the region and around the world.

AUA enrolls approximately 2,000 students across nine graduate and five undergraduate degree programs; a University Extension (called AUA Open Education) offers continuing education or preparatory courses to more than 3,000 students annually, and trains and assists hundreds of entrepreneurs in villages and rural areas of Armenia; the University operates many research environments with both disciplinary and transdisciplinary driving forces, which address critical national and international problems.

Working closely with the President and the University’s faculty, the next Provost will oversee the University’s academic and research programs and academic support units. The Provost will have responsibility for a strategy of enhancing enrollments from Armenia and abroad. The Provost will oversee the growth of additional undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including developing a plan to launching a doctoral program. The University aims to expand its facilities adding science labs, creative meeting places and instructional spaces to diversify learning and accommodate students from Armenia and abroad.

Reflecting the President’s transformative priorities, AUA’s Provost will oversee a reassessment of the design of academic programs and research environments to ensure their match to solve complex challenges and strengthen disciplinary standards/expectations; shepherding the new strategic planning process; promoting AUA Open Education as the infrastructure for collaborative engagement of industry, SME’s, NGO’s, local government and academia in multi-disciplinary reality labs; nurturing relationships with ministries with the goal of supporting K-16 initiatives; working with administrative and academic units to introduce greater efficiencies into current procedures; building capacity among faculty and staff; further developing the Division of Student Affairs to address student needs; working with the Executive Team to ensure fair and equitable institutional decision-making; and working with administrative and academic units to further the institution’s local/global and internationalization agendas. Additionally, as the University grapples with the Covid-19 pandemic, the Provost needs to be able to manage a fluid situation and ensure that policies and procedures reflect the concerns and needs of students, faculty, and staff.
