Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, Geographic Information and Computer Science

The Department of Geography, Geomatics, and Environment (GGE) and the Department of Mathematical and Computational Sciences (MCS) at the University of Toronto Mississauga (UTM) invite applications for a full-time continuing teaching stream appointment in the area of Geographic Information and Computer Science. This will be a joint appointment between GGE (51%) and MCS (49%).  The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, and will commence on July 1, 2021 or shortly thereafter.

Candidates must have a Master’s degree in geographic information system (GIS), computer science (CS) or a related discipline by the time of the appointment. A Ph.D. is preferred.  We seek candidates who have a record of excellent teaching and interest in establishing a long-term teaching career that crosses between GIS and CS at UTM. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths (https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/geography/ and https://www.utm.utoronto.ca/math-cs-stats/). The teaching stream faculty member must demonstrate the ability to contribute to training of students in Machine Learning, Spatial Databases, Spatial Data Science, Computer Vision, Computer Science (broadly defined) and GIS.

Competitive candidates will have teaching expertise in a degree granting program at the undergraduate program level including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures; a demonstrated commitment to excellent pedagogical practices; and strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Preference will be given to candidates who have engaged with students both in and out of a course setting (for example, running seminars, contests, workshops, and engaging with student-run initiatives); have contributed to departmental administration (for example, through course coordination or by managing TAs); and have supervised student research projects.

Evidence of excellence in teaching and pedagogical inquiry is required and demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, awards and accolades, presentations at significant conferences, the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application including a strong and reflective teaching statement, sample syllabi and course materials, teaching evaluations, as well as strong letters of recommendation from referees of high standing.

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

All qualified candidates are invited to apply online by clicking the link (or button) below. Applications must include a cover letter, a current curriculum vitae, a statement of career goals, a complete teaching dossier including a teaching statement, course evaluations and selected course syllabi and materials supporting teaching quality and experience, and a 1-2 page statement of equity and diversity.

Equity and diversity are among UTM’s core values and are essential to academic excellence. We seek candidates who value diversity and whose research, teaching and service support our commitment to equity. The statement of equity and diversity submitted as part of the application might cover topics such as (but not limited to) teaching that incorporates a focus on underrepresented communities, the development of inclusive pedagogies, or the mentoring of student from underrepresented groups.

Applicants must also provide the name and contact information of three references. At least one reference must primarily address the candidate’s teaching. The University of Toronto’s recruiting tool will automatically solicit and collect letters of reference from each once an application is submitted. Applicants, however, remain responsible for ensuring that references submit letters by the closing date.

Submission guidelines can be found at http://uoft.me/how-to-apply.  We recommend combining attached documents into one or two files in PDF/MS Word format. For enquiries, please contact the search committee chair, Professor Yuhong He, at chair.utm.geography@utoronto.ca.

All application materials, including reference letters, must be received by Thursday, October 29, 2020.
