DEAN OF ARCHITECTURE, ARTS AND HUMANITIES

Clemson University is a selective, public, Carnegie R1 research university in a college-town setting. Established in 1899 through the will of the founder, Thomas Green Clemson, the land-grant university is located in Upstate South Carolina in the shadow of the Blue Ridge Mountains and along Hartwell Lake. The University provides bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in more than 100 majors through seven academic colleges and Extension offices in every county of the state as well as teaching and research sites in Charleston, Columbia, Greenville and Greenwood as well as four international sites.

 

The College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities produces significant scholarship, and offers 28 undergraduate and graduate degrees in disciplines spanning visual and performing arts, design and building, and the humanities. By uniting the humanities with the disciplines of design and building and the arts, Clemson University’s College of Architecture, Arts and Humanities offers both disciplinary focused and unique interdisciplinary opportunities for exploration and achievement – opportunities that are rigorous and imaginative, classical and innovative.

 

The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the college and reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs. The Dean holds faculty rank and provides leadership, vision, and strategic planning to help formulate and implement educational policies while serving as the collegiate faculty’s agent in the execution of such policies. The Dean serves as the principal internal and external spokesperson for the college as well as for its mission of promoting all areas associated with this college.

The successful candidate for Dean will demonstrate outstanding capacity to communicate with multiple constituencies, provide leadership for the college’s broad spectrum of academic activities, and develop an engaging vision for the future of the college.  Additional desired qualities include a demonstrated record of recruiting and retaining faculty; a commitment to the principles and practices of shared governance; a strong commitment to diversity; strong fiscal and personnel management skills; an ability to enhance research; and demonstrated success in obtaining philanthropic support, and/or show a genuine enthusiasm to engage in such fundraising, and the skills to steward such philanthropic support. A successful candidate for Dean will embrace the challenges and opportunities to provide strong programs in one of Clemson’s premier colleges and will possess the skills, leadership, and entrepreneurial vision to advance the goals in the ClemsonForward strategic plan.
