The Department of Biology ( has over 35 faculty with excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching and research, and offers bachelors, masters, and PhD degrees in the biological sciences. The Institute for the Environment and Sustainability ( has core faculty and staff as well as faculty affiliates from over 10 departments and programs, and offers interdisciplinary undergraduate majors in environmental science, sustainability, energy, and food systems and food studies, as well as a professional Master of Environmental Science degree program. There are also two interdepartmental graduate degree programs, one in ecology, evolution and environmental biology (, and the other in cell, molecular, and structural biology (  The Institute for Food was initiated as a provost-funded, interdisciplinary innovation project which now has funding from USDA ( Research and teaching are supported by outstanding core facilities, including the Ecology Research Center, the Center for Aquatic and Watershed Sciences, the Willard Sherman Turrell Herbarium, the Center for Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics, and the Center for Advanced Microscopy and Imaging.  Miami is a top-ranked public university for its commitment to excellence in both undergraduate and graduate education.
