BGSU is located at the interface of two key agriculturally-dominated western Lake Erie watersheds, Maumee River and Portage River, and is in close proximity to larger population centers of Toledo and Cleveland, OH and Detroit, MI. The Center is composed of affiliate faculty who maintain advanced analytical laboratories, as well as a field research facility at nearby Sandusky Bay. In addition to research, affiliate members prepare students for water-related careers in the private sector, government or academica. Faculty members come from several departments with diverse interests and expertise including environmental microbiology, bioinformatics, phytoplankton ecology, harmful algal blooms, remote sensing and geospatial sciences, hydrology, fish and invertebrate ecology, aquaculture, food web dynamics, climate change, biogeochemistry, toxicology, economics and environmental policy.
