Division of Biological Sciences, University of Missouri-Columbia

We are a collegial, energetic, and diverse community of researchers dedicated to scientific discovery and to training and educating the next generation of biologists. Research in our Division spans all levels of biological organizations, from molecules to ecosystems, using a diversity of organisms and modern approaches with particular strengths in several core research areas. The extent of interdisciplinary research and the absence of departmental boundaries among disciplines in the life sciences are hallmark features of our department and campus.

Our undergraduate program provides both majors and non-majors a strong foundation in general biology and emphasizes the excitement of discovery and the development of individual creativity and critical reasoning skills. Graduate students learn diverse scientific approaches for studying the natural world, for recognizing new relationships and patterns, and for defining new questions and areas of scientific inquiry. Students at all levels are attracted to our very flexible programs of study and the integration of faculty research into the curriculum.
